Clinical implication

Pump price does not predict haemolysis. And the pre-cannulation LDH was the highest value in the whole dataset, which is the second pillar of the pre-cannulation-baseline argument.

Comparator

Each other; and on-support values against pre-ECMO values

Design
Retrospective cohort

Intervention

Two centrifugal pumps differing 20 to 30-fold in cost

Limitations

Retrospective, single centre, non-randomised pump allocation

Main result

No significant difference in daily plasma haemoglobin (5.7 plus or minus 3.6 versus 5.7 plus or minus 4.2 mg/dL), lactate (2.8 versus 3.0) or LDH (2656 plus or minus 1607 versus 2689 plus or minus 1726) over the first 10 days. Pre-ECMO LDH was 4004 plus or minus 3583 and 3604 plus or minus 3354 — HIGHER than anything recorded on support, in both arms. Authors: the difference in cost of the devices does not correlate with performance and outcomes.

Population

80 adult ECMO patients in otherwise identical circuits
